Derek MacDonald, Principal

Derek MacDonald, Ph.D. is a versatile educator that believes deeply in empowering students in their own learning. He also believes that the most effective learners are self-directed. A student will flourish working towards an independent curriculum designed to meet that student’s goals.

He has taught virtually all levels of students including P-12 (public and private schools) as well as undergraduate and graduate university students. He has taught all P-12 subjects in addition to University Statistics, Curriculum Studies, Technology Integration into Education, and Philosophy of Education. He continues to do research in the areas of learning and how youth create meaning.

Derek’s credentials include Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) and Bachelor of Education (Secondary) from the Memorial University of Newfoundland, Master of Information Technology Education from Dalhousie University, and Doctor of Philosophy (Adult Education) from the University of Georgia. He also holds an ATC2 Nova Scotia Teaching Certificate and has been a member of Mensa since he was 12 years of age.

When not in school Derek spends time with his family, enjoys tuba, soccer, and renovating his home. 


M. Rina Otero, Gold Lake Director

Ms. Otero, M.S. is the Founder of King’s View Academy in 2000’ and President of Gold Lake Consultants (Teacher Education/Certification, Program/Student Evaluation, and Curriculum Development).

She worked for the USA Government creating programs for high-risk students which became a national model, and developed innovative teacher training programs. She also owned and operated for 5 years a successful flower and plant shop in Boulder, Colorado.

In 2007 she was awarded the Association of Psychologists of Nova Scotia, President’s Choice Award for exemplary contribution to the field of education through the holistic development of the child.

Crystal MacDonald, Yoga

Crystal Mac Donald is a dedicated yoga instructor. She completed her 200hr Yoga teacher training in 2017 at Therapeutic Approach Yoga Studio. She received her Professional Counselling Certificate in 2008 from CTI. She earned her BA in Sociology from Dalhousie University in 2004. Crystal has worked with children and youth for over 10 years. Crystal has been practicing yoga for 5 years and is excited to continue teaching yoga at Kings View Academy.

Crystal spends a majority of her time practicing, teaching and learning yoga. She also enjoys hiking, reading, creating art, Nature and spending time with her family and friends.

Crystal is grateful to be part of the Kings View Academy team.

Deepti Soobarah, French

French native speaker from Mauritius, Deepti Soobarah has always been interested in this language. She received both an O-level and A-level certificate in French language from Cambridge University. She was awarded a TCF Dap from the French Ministry of Education and is now pursuing the French major at Saint Mary's University. She enjoys hiking and painting.

Paul R.J. Lenarczyk, English and Social Studies

Paul R.J. Lenarczyk, B.A., B.Ed., LL.B., was born in Warsaw, Poland and immigrated to Canada at the age of thirteen. He earned his Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours in History from the University of New Brunswick, and followed that up with an LL.B. Tracing the footsteps of his mother, he then earned an Education degree from St. Thomas University. He has been teaching in public schools for fourteen years, drama workshops for twenty-six years, and debate for twelve. He is delighted to be joining the staff of KVA as the Teacher of English and Social Studies. 

Sherry Lee Hunter, Drama

Sherry Lee Hunter founded, performed in, and was the Artistic Director of the world class Physical Theatre Company, Jest in Time Theatre.

Jest toured nationally and internationally ( including Hong Kong, Australia, Alaska, Japan) and did three National CBC Television specials. Sherry Lee has performed as a solo actor in theatres including Neptune, Ship's Company, Atlantic Theatre Festival and many others. She performed her new solo work "Alone" at the Atlantic Fringe Festival in 2014. She has a great passion for teaching and has taught nationally and internationally with Jest, and independently at Neptune Theatre's Pre Professional Training Program for many years as well as Halifax Independent School ( resident Drama teacher), Halifax Dance, Acadia University, PERFORM N.S., and privately to all ages. She is a graduate of the former Canadian Mime School in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Leonard Pitt School of Mime in California and trained with the late Master Mime Tony Montanaro in South Paris Maine for over 25 years. Sherry Lee describes her teaching as a process where students learn to create their own personal style of theatre and theatrical self expression.


Barbara Dearborn, Dance

Barbara Dearborn, Dean MCPA School of Dance

Head of MCPA School of Dance since 1993, Ms Dearborn now carries the title of Dean.

Ms. Dearborn is a graduate of the Canadian College of Dance, Montreal and Ryerson University Theatre Department with Major in Dance. She has been President of the National Board of the Canadian Dance Teachers’ Association, is current President of CDTA Atlantic Branch and is a Registered member and Certified teacher of the Royal Academy of Dance. She also holds an Honours Certificate in Modern Stage and National Dance from the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance. She has been National Ballet Consultant and is an Examiner in Ballet and Stage for the Canadian Dance Teachers’ Association Ms. Dearborn has been choreographer for the Montreal Children’s Theatre, performed in musicals, ballet, contemporary dance performance, film and television, and has been co-artistic director and choreographer of the Step of Two mime and dance company. She is Artistic Director of the Conservatory Ballet Ensemble.
